Boxing Day assessment – likable romcom with a cheeky nod to Love Truly | Movie

Aml Ameen is an actor and director who made his identify in Kidulthood in 2006. Now he has made this likable Black British aspirational romcom within the transatlantic model, brashly giving his viewers loads of glam-tourist London places with a cheeky nod to Richard Curtis’s Love Truly.

Ameen performs Melvin, a British author whose smash-hit bestselling ebook has taken him to LA, the place he has fallen in love with casting director Lisa (Aja Naomi King). Now he needs to take her for a Christmas vacation to London to satisfy his prolonged household; his formidable mom Shirley (Marianne Jean-Baptiste) might be internet hosting her conventional Boxing Day celebration.

However it’s tough. His sister is private assistant to the now internationally well-known singing star Georgia (Leigh-Anne Pinnock from Little Combine), who used to exit with Melvin and whose coronary heart he broke when he dumped her. In the meantime, Lisa can’t carry herself to inform Melvin that she has been provided a prestigious job to work with Peter Jackson in New Zealand – and that she’s pregnant. Come to consider it, she might not have shared that information with Peter Jackson, both.

Boxing Day has its flaws: I’m undecided that the world actually wanted one other spoof of the Andrew Lincoln/Keira Knightley placard scene from Love Truly. However Ameen has completely plausibly introduced off a high-gloss mainstream image with a giant coronary heart and a really good supporting forged, together with Stephen Dillane as Shirley’s new boyfriend. For Ameen, it’s one other step on the best way to Hollywood stardom.

Boxing Day is in cinemas from 3 December.
